Redlands Bicycle Classic https://danagardner.zenfolio.com/blog/2014/4/redlands-bicycle-classic I feel very fortunate to be a working photographer in an area that provides one incredible race after another.  Last weekend was the San Dimas Stage Race, followed by this past weeks Redlands Bicycle Classic.  Having few years experience as an official with USA Cycling, many years of riding bikes, and more countless year photographing bikes - I appreciate what southern California has to offer for both the racers and those of us covering the sports.  The Redlands organizers put on such a great race.  Results were fast, podiums were easy to shoot, and the volunteers were amazing.  One particular thing I enjoy about covering Redlands is that it's an opportunity to cover para cycling.  These athletes are incredible!  Olympian, Amber Neben has created a non-profit (Dare to Be) that helps provide bicycles to underprivileged youth...  She was able to give to young girls their first hand cycles at this event.  Normally a bike like this starts at around $1800 - something most families could never afford.  In addition, she was able to raise enough money to purchase a 3rd hand cycle for another lucky youngster in the near future to receive.  I hope to cover the para Olympics in Brazil in 2016 along with the Olympics themselves.

Amgen Tour of California https://danagardner.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/5/amgen-tour-of-california Tomorrow begins the 8-day Amgen Tour of California.  I feel extremely lucky as a sports photographer to have such easy access to such an amazing event as well as many others!   I look forward to tomorrow's Stage 1 in Escondido, CA which will host both the depart and the finish.  With a sprint point and 3 climbs, it should make for a great day of photographs.

Look for images from Stage 1, 6, 7 and 8 this week.

SDSR Rocks!!!!!!!!! https://danagardner.zenfolio.com/blog/2013/3/sdsr-rocks 2013 SAN DIMAS STAGE RACE I don't feel the need to blog very often, but do want to say what a well organized race the San Dimas stage race was this past weekend.  In addition to beautiful weather on all three days, the Southern California Velo Cycling Club really have all the details down (road marshals, well marked course - all 3 days, plenty of support, vendors, and a great turn out of riders/teams.  Being a photographer here in southern California, this has become one of my favorite races to shoot.  I also had the great fortune to see Vaughn, founder of DailyPeloton.com where many of my images can be seen.  He's had a long, rough year, but is looking great.  Thanks to Bill McCusker for another great opportunity.  I'm really looking forward to this year's race season.

The people you meet... https://danagardner.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/11/the-people-you-meet On a flight back to Los Angeles last week from Houston, I sat next to a really nice fellow named Ian Head.  We chatted most of the flight, sharing stories of both of our sports related careers.  Many of you in the sports world might know of him, and for those that don't, you should look him up.  He's quite an accomplished sports journalist/writer from Australia.  He's covered several Olympics among many other events.  He was so kind to offer me advice and connections should I ever make it down to Australia to cover, possibly, The Tour Down Under (which is in January each year).  The other person in our row of seats was a college soccer coach.  I never imagined to end up in a row of "sports people", but it made for great conversation during the 3 hour flight.  It reminded me of the old expression, "you never know the people you'll meet".

Photo Show https://danagardner.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/8/photo-show Looking forward to the photo show that I'm a part of this Friday night.  I've been shooting on the street with several other photographers for the past 6 months, and this Friday will be a show of our collective showing of our "Street Photography" - quite different from the usual sports that I enjoy shooting.

On a different note, I can't begin to state how much I enjoyed shooting the Tour de France last month.  Oddly enough, both of my cameras had serious malfunctions while there, and are both being repaired now.  It feels strange not to have a camera on my shoulder after day in, day out of shooting.  I'm already preparing for next summer's possible trip to shoot the Tour again.  The route will be announced October 24th, but will begin in Corsica - a first.
